FIFA expands VAR powers, adds three‑minute half pause
FIFA announced expanded VAR authority and a three‑minute half‑time pause for the upcoming World Cup. The changes were detailed by Pierluigi Collina at a media briefing.
VAR may now review a referee's decision on a corner kick if it is judged incorrect. This broadens the previous VAR remit that focused on goals, penalties, red cards and mistaken identity.
VAR can also intervene when a referee awards a yellow or red card to the wrong player. The correction must be made before play resumes.
Each half will include a three‑minute stoppage. The pause is intended for medical assessment and player recovery.
The adjustments aim to improve match flow and reduce controversial calls. Collina emphasized uniform application across all venues.
The new protocols will be tested in the tournament's opening matches. Officials will receive training on the expanded VAR responsibilities before the competition starts.
