Tony Popovic Takes Socceroos Helm Ahead of Asian Qualifiers

6 June 2026

Tony Popovic was appointed head coach of the Socceroos in 2024 after Graham Arnold resigned. The appointment arrived days before crucial Asian qualifiers against China and Japan.

Popovic had previously taken charge of Western Sydney, a newly created side. He guided them to an Asian Champions League title within two seasons.

He then moved to Perth Glory. There he secured the club's first piece of silverware in the A-League era.

Popovic later assumed the Melbourne Victory job after the team recorded its first wooden spoon. He delivered an Australia Cup triumph and a grand final appearance.

In his early weeks with the Socceroos, Popovic observed existing practices and planned adjustments. Lollies were removed from team meetings as part of the new regime.

Players have begun adapting to Popovic's stated expectations and cultural shift. The changes aim to underpin Australia's World Cup qualification campaign.
