Brighton's £30m bid for 18‑year‑old Ahanor puts Atalanta under pressure

Football Italia reported a £30 million (≈€34 million) offer from Brighton & Hove Albion for 18‑year‑old Italian defender Honest Ahanor, the Atalanta‑born talent who has already logged 41 senior appearances and nine Champions League matches this season. The bid arrives as the Premier League side intensifies its summer recruitment drive, targeting the teenager after his senior Italy debut under interim coach Silvio Baldini.

Atalanta secured Honest Ahanor from Genoa last summer for €20 million, a fee that made him the second most expensive Italian 17‑year‑old in history. In less than a year the defender’s value has surged after a breakthrough campaign that saw him amass 41 senior appearances, including nine Champions League outings.

Ahanor earned his first senior Italy caps earlier this month under interim coach Silvio Baldini, appearing in friendlies against Luxembourg and Greece. The squad for those matches was largely composed of Under‑21 players, highlighting the youngster’s rapid ascent.

Brighton & Hove Albion’s transfer policy favours identifying elite young talent before larger clubs enter the market. The £30 million bid for Ahanor exemplifies that approach, targeting a defender with both domestic and European experience.

Atalanta’s negotiating position is bolstered by recent financial inflows, with the Bergamo club securing around €105 million from the imminent departures of Marco Palestra and Ederson. This liquidity reduces any immediate pressure to sell Ahanor.

Having invested €20 million in Ahanor only a year ago, Atalanta may expect a higher offer that reflects his growing importance. The club could also anticipate further market appreciation if the teenager remains in Serie A for another season.

European interest in Ahanor is likely to intensify as his blend of athleticism, composure and Champions League exposure attracts attention. Brighton’s early move signals its willingness to invest heavily in a promising defensive prospect amid a summer market focused on youthful potential.
