Pierre Sage rejects Saudi riches for Premier League dream at Palace

🇬🇧

Pierre Sage has confirmed that his long-held ambition to coach in the Premier League was the decisive factor in his move from RC Lens to Crystal Palace. The Frenchman, speaking to L’Équipe, framed his decision as a career-defining choice rather than a financial calculation. Sage’s appointment at Palace follows a standout season at Lens, where he guided the club to second place in Ligue 1 and secured the Coupe de France.

Sage, who previously managed Olympique Lyonnais, described his managerial journey as unconventional but insisted the timing of the England opportunity was perfect. He rejected the notion that financial incentives drove his switch, framing the move as a personal and professional milestone. “If I had really been the mercenary some people wanted to make me out to be, I would have gone to Saudi Arabia and earned ten times more,” he told L’Équipe. “There were offers with salary conditions I had never imagined in my life, far higher than Palace’s… My logic wasn’t financial; it was to coach in the Premier League.”

The French coach’s success at Lens—finishing second in Ligue 1 and lifting the Coupe de France—cemented his reputation as one of France’s most promising coaching talents. His decision to prioritise the Premier League over lucrative alternatives underscores the prestige of English football’s top division. Sage’s move to Palace marks a significant step in his career, aligning his ambitions with one of England’s established clubs.

Liam Wraith contributed reporting to the interview with L’Équipe, providing additional context to Sage’s reflections on his career trajectory.
