Real Madrid's €100m ceiling leaves Tottenham target out of reach
Tottenham Hotspur have submitted a bid that approaches €100 million for Premier League midfielder Mateus Fernandes, a player also on Real Madrid’s shortlist. The Spanish giants are unwilling to meet the figure, leaving the transfer to the London club virtually certain.
Real Madrid entered the market for Fernandes after a midfield that struggled creatively last season, prompting the administration to seek fresh options. Improving the creative spark in the centre of the park became a summer priority for the club.
Mario Cortegana noted that Real Madrid and manager Jose Mourinho held Fernandes in high regard, confirming his status as a genuine target for Los Blancos. The midfielder’s profile matched the club’s desire for technical versatility.
Real Madrid’s budget for the deal fell far short of Tottenham’s near‑€100 million offer, and the club indicated it would not stretch to that level. Consequently, the Spanish side could not compete for the player’s services.
With the bid out of reach, Perez and Co. will redirect their resources toward alternative acquisitions. The club’s transfer strategy now emphasizes other midfield prospects.
Midfield option Nico Paz, once a serious candidate to return, has committed his future to Como for the coming season, further narrowing Real Madrid’s shortlist. His departure underscores the urgency of securing new talent.
Enzo Fernandez has emerged as Real Madrid’s primary target, yet Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is expected to protect his player and complicate any departure. Negotiations with Chelsea have not yet begun, heightening the need for swift action.
The current emphasis lies on generating player sales, with the expectation that a significant outbound transfer will fund the club’s upcoming signings. A big sale could enable Real Madrid to re‑enter the market with renewed financial firepower.
