Udinese's Serie A gamble on former Watford midfielder Giorgi Chakvetadze
Midfielder Giorgi Chakvetadze, 26, leaves Watford after three seasons to join Serie A side Udinese, the Pozzo family‑owned club. The Georgian international, capped 39 times, made 103 appearances for the Hornets and featured in all but one Championship match after returning from injury in November.
Gian Luca Nani explained that Chakvetadze felt it was time to test himself in another league after three seasons in the Championship. Nani added that, after offers from around Europe, the technical department chose to retain a very talented player, ensuring he still has the chance to compete at Serie A level.
After returning from injury in November, Chakvetadze featured in all but one of Watford's remaining Championship fixtures last season. His consistent involvement highlighted his importance to the squad despite the recent setback.
Chakvetadze becomes the 10th player to leave Watford during the current summer window. The departures underscore a broader turnover at the Hornets as they reshape their roster.
Udinese acquire a midfielder with 39 international caps and extensive Championship experience, bolstering their squad depth ahead of the Serie A campaign. The signing aligns with the club's strategy of adding proven talent from competitive leagues.
For Watford, the exit frees a roster spot while the club maintains confidence in its ability to develop players capable of reaching top‑level football. Nani's comments suggest the technical department remains optimistic about the pathway for remaining talents.
