Ceballos to Betis? Chairman Haro sees path narrowing, Ajax in pole
Real Betis chairman Ángel Haro has poured cold water on the prospect of Dani Ceballos returning to the Verdiblancos this summer. Haro confirmed that the club and player are currently far apart in their negotiations.
Haro stated that more conditions remain unmet than met, adding that Ceballos joining Real Betis is not certain. 'That does not mean he cannot come — everything is still in development,' he told Cadena COPE.
Transfer expert Matteo Moretto reinforced the view that Ajax remain the primary contenders. 'Betis and especially Ajax are still in the race,' Moretto said, noting that Villarreal had also been linked but are not prioritising the deal.
Ceballos himself is understood to favour a return to Real Betis, where he made his breakthrough and earned a move to Real Madrid. However, the club from Seville would reportedly not place him at the top of their wage structure.
Earlier reports from Spain suggested Ceballos was unhappy with Betis’ efforts to meet his demands. Moretto added that Villarreal had made an offer but were not treating the 29-year-old as a priority target.
The situation leaves Ajax in a stronger position after they had already submitted a proposal for Ceballos. Their potential sale of Sean Steur to Newcastle United could free up funds for a swift move.
Jordi Cruijff, Ajax’s technical director, is expected to deploy part of any Steur sale proceeds to fund new signings, Haro’s comments underline the shifting dynamics: Betis’ hopes are fading while Ajax’s pursuit gains momentum.
