Derby’s Championship push hinges on loan capture of Divin Mubama

🇬🇧

Derby County are in advanced talks to sign Manchester City striker Divin Mubama on a season-long loan. The Championship side’s pursuit of the highly-rated young forward comes as they target a return to the play-offs in 2026/27 after narrowly missing out last campaign.

The move is being driven by new Derby assistant coach Ben Wilkinson, who spent a decade developing players within Manchester City’s academy. His appointment has strengthened trust between the two clubs, with Derby seeking to accelerate Mubama’s development through regular first-team football.

Manchester City are prioritising senior minutes for Mubama over another year in youth football, making a loan to Derby a logical step. The Etihad hierarchy view the Championship as an ideal platform for the striker’s progression, mirroring the early-career paths of players such as Harry Kane and Tammy Abraham.

For Derby, securing Mubama would address a need for proven attacking reinforcement ahead of their push for promotion. The club’s ambition for the upcoming season is underpinned by a clear strategy to strengthen across multiple positions this summer.

A loan deal would also serve Manchester City’s long-term interests by maximising the asset’s value through guaranteed competitive minutes. Wilkinson and Derby manager Jon Eustace will integrate Mubama into their systems, providing City with direct performance data to inform future decisions.

Personal terms between Mubama and Derby are not expected to pose obstacles, though rival proposals from other clubs remain a factor. The striker and his representatives are yet to finalise their preferred destination for the season.

If completed, the loan would mark another instance of elite young strikers using the Championship as a proving ground before returning to the Premier League.
