Maresma faces the test of preserving City’s winning DNA
New Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca steps into Pep Guardiola’s shoes with a squad fresh off FA Cup, Carabao Cup and a Champions League trophy, but already missing captain Bernardo Silva and defender John Stones, while awaiting the £116 million arrival of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.
Maresca called the Manchester City job a "huge challenge" and said the target is to continue the club’s last decade of success. He added that the idea from the club is to maintain the same style of football.
"It's a young squad, but it's a very good squad," Maresca said. "We have the right mix between young players and more experienced players, which helps the young ones a lot to grow and improve."
Maresca will work with director of football Hugo Viana on any further incomings. Chelsea's Malo Gusto has been linked with a reunion with Maresca, leaving the move uncertain.
Midfielder Rodri is entering the final 12 months of his contract at the Etihad Stadium. One of Maresca's priorities will be to secure a new deal for the Spain captain.
Maresca prefers a goalkeeper who is comfortable with his feet. He must decide whether Gianluigi Donnarumma will keep the shirt or James Trafford will be given a chance as first‑team regular.
Maresca’s task will be to blend continuity with fresh talent while aiming to win and achieve important things for Manchester City. The upcoming season will test whether his approach can sustain the club’s dominance.
