Napoli's new era: Allegri appointed to steer club until 2029
Italian club Napoli confirmed on Friday that former AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri will take over as head coach, signing a contract that runs until 30 June 2029 after his dismissal following a missed Champions League qualification. The appointment gives Belgian internationals Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku a new manager for the upcoming season.
Allegri left AC Milan after the club failed to secure a Champions League spot, ending his tenure earlier this season. He signed a deal with Napoli that runs through June 2029.
Napoli highlighted Allegri’s own connection to the club, noting his brief playing spell with Napoli during the 1997/98 season. The club’s announcement praised his long‑term involvement in Italian football, from his debut as a coach in 2003/04 with Aglianese.
In 2007/08 Allegri guided Sassuolo to its first promotion to Serie B and captured the Serie C1 Supercoppa. He made his Serie A debut with Cagliari, steering them to a ninth‑place finish and earning the Panchina d’Oro award for best coach.
Allegri’s tenure at AC Milan began in 2010, where he secured the club’s 18th Serie A title and added a sixth Supercoppa d’Italia. He later returned to Milan for the 2023/24 season, concluding in fifth place.
From 2014 to 2019 Allegri directed Juventus to five straight league crowns, four successive Coppa Italia trophies and two Supercoppa d’Italia victories. During that spell he also led the Bianconeri to two Champions League finals, and after a two‑year hiatus he returned to win his fifth Coppa Italia in 2024.
The appointment gives Belgian midfield star Kevin De Bruyne and striker Romelu Lukaku a clear manager for the next campaign. Lukaku, however, appears poised for a possible exit from Napoli following the upcoming World Cup.
Napoli will now look to translate Allegri’s extensive trophy‑laden résumé into success on the pitch next season.
