Rafael Leao’s World Cup stage could decide Barcelona’s next move

The heat of the Texas sun bore down on the field as Portugal’s training session wound down, but all eyes were on one player. Rafael Leao stood apart, stretching under the glare, his presence magnified by the renewed speculation linking him to Barcelona.

The Portuguese international will have one of the biggest stages of the summer when Portugal face Spain in the World Cup Round of 16, with Barcelona monitoring his situation. Reports claim the La Liga champions have recently enquired about the 27-year-old’s future, with Tottenham Hotspur and several Saudi Pro League clubs also said to be tracking the winger.

Barcelona’s interest is not new. The club explored options to strengthen the left wing two summers ago, and Hansi Flick’s team have now reopened contact to understand the conditions surrounding Leao’s contract. His current deal with AC Milan runs until 2028, but new head coach Ruben Amorim does not see him as part of his long-term plans.

Leao’s opportunity arrives Monday against Spain. After beginning the tournament on the bench in the group stage, he earned his first start in the Round of 32, playing the full match and providing the assist for Goncalo Ramos’ stoppage-time winner. He continues to compete for a starting place with Pedro Neto and Joao Felix on Portugal’s left flank.

The fixture presents a stern test. Spain’s right-sided combination of Pedro Porro and Lamine Yamal has been one of the tournament’s most potent, with Yamal emerging as the World Cup’s most successful dribbler. Leao’s defensive contribution has occasionally drawn criticism, making this match a chance to silence doubts.

Barcelona sporting director Deco is currently in the United States to watch several World Cup matches, with Portugal’s knockout fixture high on his list. His presence underscores the significance of Leao’s performance, especially after Barcelona’s recent investments in Anthony Gordon and Julián Alvarez.

AC Milan’s valuation sits between €60 million and €70 million, a figure that complicates any deal. However, reports suggest Milan could consider a loan with an obligation to buy, a structure that may lower the financial barrier for interested clubs.

For Leao, the stakes are clear. A strong showing against Spain could accelerate Barcelona’s pursuit, while a muted display may delay or derail their interest. His ability to answer questions about his work rate without the ball will be closely scrutinised.

The Blaugrana’s need for a left-sided attacker remains pressing, and Leao’s World Cup performances will weigh heavily in their decision-making process. Whether through a permanent deal or a loan with future purchase, his next 90 minutes could shape his future club destination.
