Wouter Vandenhaute tipped to join Antwerp takeover consortium
The corridors of the Great Old’s Bosuilstadion buzz with uncertainty tonight. Royal Antwerp owner Paul Gheysens is racing against time to secure his club’s future, and the next 48 hours may decide whether he stays at the helm or cedes control entirely.
A €10 million repayment deadline to Fasanara Capital, originally due by 30 June, has come and gone without payment. The London-based firm had been lined up to take over Antwerp’s Matricule 1 if the funds failed to materialise on schedule. Yet Gheysens managed to negotiate a delay, though Fasanara Capital has no intention of assuming ownership.
The Belgian businessman now faces a stark reality: his tenure at the club may be nearing its end. Yet he has not closed the door on remaining president if minority investors can be found to buy into the club, easing his financial strain while keeping him in charge.
A rival path is emerging. A consortium led by Toby Alderweireld, Jacques Vandermeiren and Wouter Vandenhaute has completed extensive due diligence and is poised to act the moment the green light is given. Their involvement would mark a generational shift in the club’s leadership.
The coming days will be decisive. Fasanara Capital’s extended payment deadline expires this week, and the consortium’s readiness contrasts with the club’s current leadership vacuum. Royal Antwerp currently lacks a head coach, has no confirmed transfers, and has yet to name a sporting director—all while preseason preparations for 2026-27 are already underway.
Gheysens, however, has not ruled out staying on if minority investors can be secured. The scenario would allow him to step back financially without leaving the club entirely.
Vandenhaute’s potential involvement adds a high-profile media figure to the consortium, signalling ambitions beyond local ownership. His presence could reshape Antwerp’s profile both on and off the pitch.
The Matricule 1’s future now rests on two tracks: Gheysens’ ability to restructure with new investors, or the consortium’s readiness to take full control and steer the club in a new direction.
For supporters gathered outside the Bosuil, the next few days will feel like a waiting room for destiny—one where every hour counts.
