Tim Bakens takes charge at SK Beveren amid historic promotion

Tim Bakens has been appointed head coach of SK Beveren for the 2024‑25 season, signing a one‑year contract after the club’s unbeaten Challenger Pro League campaign. The Dutch coach will replace Marink Zeedijk as the team prepares for its return to Belgium’s top flight.

SK Beveren enjoyed a season for the record books, losing no matches in the Challenger Pro League and finishing as outright champions. The achievement raises expectations for the upcoming Jupiler Pro League campaign.

The 43‑year‑old Bakens spent the previous season as an assistant at PEC Zwolle and knows technical director Bob Peeters from their time together at Helmond Sport. He signed a one‑year deal to lead the Waasland side.

"Dit is mijn eerste uitdaging als hoofdtrainer", Bakens told , adding that he is analysing the Belgian competition and has already watched several matches. He said he does not yet consider himself an expert on the Jupiler Pro League but aims to become one quickly.

Bakens joked that Bob Peeters allegedly called the KBVB to ask how many points could be taken to the first division, only to learn none could be carried over, meaning the club must start from scratch. He emphasized that the club’s sporting management is working hard to attract new players and that daily 100 % effort will aim for a safe season with occasional breakthroughs.

SK Beveren opens its season on 9 August with an away match against Royal Antwerp FC, followed by home fixtures against Anderlecht and an away game at Zulte Waregem. A strong start is intended to avoid having to chase results later in the campaign.
