Barcelona’s defensive future rattled by Araujo’s World Cup silence

Ronald Araujo returned to FC Barcelona after the 2026 FIFA World Cup without having played a single minute, as Uruguay’s early exit left the Uruguayan defender on the sidelines and forced the club to reassess his role in Hansi Flick’s revamped defence.

Barcelona had hoped the tournament would boost Araujo’s market perception and re‑establish him ahead of the season. He remains under contract at Camp Nou until 2031.

Araujo was dealing with physical discomfort before Uruguay’s opening match. Despite optimism he could feature against Spain, he remained unavailable throughout the tournament.

The defensive hierarchy at Barcelona now includes Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin and Eric Garcia, who have strengthened their positions. Andreas Christensen’s recovery also provides another reliable option in defence.

Hansi Flick has already established a new defensive structure. As a result, Araujo is no longer untouchable within the rotation.

The club has no intention of forcing a departure. It respects Araujo’s desire to remain at Camp Nou.

Araujo will have to work harder to fend off competition. He must prove his worth in the upcoming season.
