World Cup

Victor Munoz’s recovery path shapes Liverpool’s summer plans

Spain’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay at the World Cup left Liverpool’s new signing Victor Munoz on the sidelines as Spain manager Luis de la Fuente gave a progress update. The result settled one question for Spain while leaving another hanging for Liverpool supporters. Munoz arrived at the World Cup carrying a calf concern and then suffered another muscular issue during an individual recovery programme. In that context his absence against Uruguay felt more sensible than alarming. Luis de la Fuente said before the Uruguay match: “The 26 players are exceptionally motivated. Víctor is making progress and getting closer to recovery, and everyone has that positive sense of anticipation. What we have to do is maintain our identity. Know our strengths and keep improving.” Liverpool knew they were buying potential, speed, directness and tactical flexibility when they moved for Victor Munoz from Osasuna. They also knew that any player arriving from an intense season and heading straight into a World Cup would need careful handling. Victor Munoz explained after completing the move: “It’s an opportunity you can’t pass up. He (Andoni Iraola) instilled confidence in me, showed me how his team plays,” and added, “He played an important role in my decision. The transfer happened very quickly. I’ve been focused on the World Cup. I haven’t wanted to hear much about my future unless it was something concrete.” Andoni Iraola has only just taken charge at Anfield, and Munoz already looks like a signing shaped by the new head coach’s vision. The timing is fascinating because the player fits Iraola’s plan to reshape the attack with fresh energy. A rushed return against Uruguay would have served nobody, and the extra time allows Munoz to build fitness properly. For Liverpool, who are investing in him for years rather than weeks, that matters far more than one group‑stage appearance. Spain moved on with victory, and Munoz moved a little closer to recovery. Liverpool will take that for now.
