Marciano Vink calls Netherlands' no‑training plan in Monterrey ‘remarkable’
Former Ajax, PSV and ADO Den Haag midfielder Marciano Vink described the Dutch national team’s choice to skip a training session in Monterrey as “remarkable”, questioning the plan ahead of the World Cup 2026 round‑of‑32 clash with Morocco on the night of 29 June (Dutch time) in Mexico’s 30‑degree heat.
Vink, a former player of Ajax, PSV and ADO Den Haag, said the decision not to train in Monterrey is “merkwaardig”. He added that the choice raises many questions given the importance of the match.
He explained, “Als wij een Europese wedstrijd speelden in hete omstandigheden... Dan moest je de warming-up zo doen dat je er doorheen ging. Dat het zweet je uitbrak en je niet toegaf.” The quote reflects his view on how teams must push through heat during warm‑ups.
Vink noted, “De avond ervoor trainde je al in het stadion en voelde je al de warmte. Wennen lijkt mij heel erg belangrijk.” He argued that early exposure to the stadium’s temperature is essential for adaptation.
The Netherlands will meet Morocco in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The match is scheduled for the night of Monday 29 June into Tuesday 30 June Dutch time, with a 03:00 Dutch kickoff corresponding to 19:00 local time in Monterrey.
At kickoff, the temperature in Monterrey is expected to be around thirty degrees Celsius, making acclimatisation a key factor. Vink’s comments underline the tactical relevance of pre‑match preparation in such conditions.
Vink reflected on his own playing days, recalling how he managed similar situations as a professional. His experience informs his view that early exposure to the venue’s climate is essential.
His criticism could force the coaching staff to reconsider the preparation plan ahead of the match. The comment adds pressure on the Dutch side to justify the unconventional approach.
