£4-7m windfall looms for Manchester City as Alvarez exit saga intensifies

Manchester City stand to receive between £4-7 million from a sell-on clause as Julian Alvarez pushes for a summer exit from Atletico Madrid. The Blues inserted a 10% sell-on clause when Alvarez left for Atletico Madrid in 2024 for £81.5 million, the most lucrative sale in the club’s history. Alvarez has since scored 49 goals in 106 appearances for Atletico, including 20 last season, while his World Cup performances with Argentina have intensified speculation around his future. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are among the clubs reported to be interested in acquiring his services ahead of the new season. The saga reached a new juncture after Alvarez publicly confirmed his desire to leave Atletico following Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria in Arlington, Texas. Atletico responded by ruling out a sale to Barcelona and pointed to Alvarez’s £430 million release clause as the only possible exit route. Manchester City’s sell-on clause, structured as a 10% cut on any profit Atletico make above the original £81.5 million fee, now stands to generate a potential windfall. According to the Manchester Evening News, City could receive between £4-7 million if Alvarez departs Atletico for around £130 million. A £130 million deal would generate a profit of roughly £48-49 million for Atletico, with 10% of that figure flowing back to the Etihad Stadium. The exact sum remains uncertain, with Atletico’s valuation differing significantly from what Barcelona are believed to be willing to pay. Barcelona have reportedly reached a five-year contract agreement with Alvarez, though reporting elsewhere suggests certain UEFA Champions League clubs, including Barcelona, could sign him for around €150 million inclusive of taxes. For Manchester City, the payment would arrive at a timely moment as director of football Hugo Viana manages a considerable volume of transfer expenditure. City are pursuing Nottingham Forest and England midfielder Elliot Anderson, while also searching for a right-back and winger before pre-season begins in July. The Blues’ contractual foresight when sanctioning Alvarez’s departure reflects their recruitment model. This pattern is visible in the 20% sell-on clause inserted into Liam Delap’s sale to Ipswich Town, which has drawn attention as Delap’s market value has risen. Whether the Alvarez saga resolves before or after the World Cup remains unclear. Atletico are determined to hold firm, while Barcelona are unwilling to meet their valuation. For Manchester City, the outcome matters less in footballing terms than financially, with a quiet windfall back to the Etihad Stadium increasingly likely.
