Luis Castro Leads Levante Near La Liga Safety

Luis Castro has steered Levante UD to the brink of safety in La Liga's relegation fight, after his appointment in December. The club now sits just one point above the drop zone with a few matches remaining.

Castro's personal story began at age eleven when he suffered severe bleeding and was diagnosed with purpura, a condition doctors said would prevent any future physical activity. After three years of recovery, he returned to the pitch, driven by what he describes as a higher power.

He built his playing career in Portugal's lower divisions, gaining experience that later informed his coaching path. His modest playing days were followed by a diverse coaching journey across several continents.

As a coach, Castro collected trophies in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine and Brazil, demonstrating an ability to adapt to different football cultures. These successes earned him a reputation as a capable manager for clubs facing challenging situations.

In December, Levante's board placed his name on the president's desk, seeking a leader for the club's "impossible fight for survival". The appointment was seen as a gamble to reverse the team's poor form.

Club president Pablo Sánchez remarked on Sunday night, “I had heard of another Luís Castro but not this one, and this one turned out be the ideal coach for our club.” His comment underscored the surprise and confidence surrounding the hiring.

With Levante now hovering just above the relegation line, the next fixtures will test Castro's impact and determine whether his remarkable turnaround can secure top‑flight status for the remainder of the season.
