Saviola says Barcelona’s system is perfect fit for Alvarez

Former Argentina forward Javier Saviola told Catalunya Radio’s Tot gira programme that Barcelona would be the ideal destination for fellow Argentine striker Julian Alvarez, citing the club’s possession‑based style under Hansi Flick as a perfect match for the Atletico Madrid forward’s versatility.

Saviola highlighted Alvarez’s playing style, noting he is not a typical lethal goalscorer but a very complete player. He can operate on the wing, as an attacking midfielder or as a deep‑lying playmaker, and is technically very good.

He argued that Barcelona’s possession‑based football would let the forward express every aspect of his game rather than being judged solely on goal numbers. Saviola added that the Blaugrana’s talented squad would surround him and enable a very high performance.

Saviola contrasted Alvarez with Robert Lewandowski, describing Lewandowski as a classic penalty‑box striker who thrives on finishing chances. In contrast, Alvarez is far more mobile and involved in the team’s overall play, so he should not be viewed as Lewandowski’s replacement.

When asked where he sees Alvarez at his best, Saviola pointed to a role behind the main striker as an attacking midfielder. He praised Alvarez’s intelligence, decisiveness, quick acceleration, rapid turns and excellent ball control.

Saviola also said Alvarez could perform equally well as a false nine, which explains why he is so sought‑after by managers. He believes this flexibility would maximise his impact in Flick’s system.

Saviola’s endorsement adds to the growing speculation about Alvarez’s future, with Barcelona listed as a priority target for the Argentine forward.
