£100m hurdle looms for Liverpool over Lille’s Bouaddi
Liverpool could be forced to shell out a fee close to £100 million for 18‑year‑old Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, whose performances for Morocco at the 2026 World Cup have put him on Europe’s radar. Lille president Olivier Letang has signalled that any move would come at a huge cost, effectively setting a benchmark that rivals the club’s most expensive recent signings.
The 18‑year‑old has already broken through at Lille, displaying composure on the ball and a game‑reading ability that many peers lack. His rapid rise was amplified by a strong showing on the global stage, confirming his status as one of the most promising midfield talents of his generation.
When asked about a possible price, Letang replied, “How to answer the question… I spoke, mentioned the subject, gave a figure? No, never.” He stressed that the club would not disclose an exact amount, but the implication was clear: the fee would be substantial.
Letang further contextualised Bouaddi’s value by drawing parallels with established players, stating, “You have to look at his level. How many players like Elliott Anderson or Sandro Tonali, who are much older, but with no room for progress, so you have an idea of the value of Ayyoub, who has a unique profile at only 18 years old.” He suggested that the market would price Bouaddi higher than those older midfielders who have limited upside.
Liverpool’s recent transfer strategy has favoured young prospects with growth potential, making Bouaddi a natural target for the Anfield side. However, meeting a price near £100 million would turn the deal into one of the biggest outlays in the club’s history, shifting the risk from investment to gamble.
The situation reflects a wider trend in which transfer fees have escalated beyond traditional valuations, especially for players who shine at major tournaments. If Lille holds firm, Liverpool may need to reassess its priorities, as spending such a sum on a teenager could jeopardise balance across the squad.
