435 appearances: the case for Pierce Sweeney's Exeter City exit
After 435 appearances for Exeter City, Irish defender Pierce Sweeney has confirmed his departure, ending a decade‑long spell with the Grecians. The 31‑year‑old, who ranks fourth on the club’s all‑time appearance list, left after turning down a new deal offered this summer to pursue a new opportunity.
Sweeney initially arrived at St James Park from Reading in July 2016, quickly becoming a regular in the back line. Since then he has amassed 435 appearances across all competitions for Exeter City.
"I've had a lot of decisions to make from a personal and professional point of view and the club have given me everything they could," Sweeney said on the club website. He added that he felt it was the right time, at his age, to seek a new challenge elsewhere.
The defender also praised the club’s patience and respect, stating, "The football club has been really patient and has shown me the utmost respect." His comments underline the mutual appreciation after ten years of service.
In the summer of 2021, Sweeney briefly signed for Swindon Town but returned to Exeter a month later without featuring in a competitive match for the Robins. The short stint highlighted his strong ties to the Grecians.
Paul Tisdale handed Sweeney his first‑team debut shortly after his arrival, and the Irishman soon became a fan favourite. He contributed to Exeter’s promotion to League One in 2023, a period described as the club’s most successful spell.
Off the pitch, Sweeney has been admired for his work ethic and personality, earning respect from teammates and supporters alike. His departure will be felt at St James Park as the club looks ahead without his leadership.
