Arsenal's contract crunch: the gap Marciniak and Ogunnaike could fill
Arsenal face a talent gap as a wave of youth departures looms, with 15 U21, U18 and women’s players set to leave on June 30. The club’s only remaining options to plug that void are under‑23 duo Alex Marciniak and Josh Ogunnaike, whose contracts also expire at month‑end.
June 30 is the standard expiry date for Premier League contracts, meaning players leave at midnight on that day. Arsenal saw a number of young players depart at that moment, highlighting the club’s turnover.
Earlier in June, Arsenal announced that 15 players from the U21, U18 and women’s squads would exit as free agents. Among the three remaining in negotiations, forward Caitlin Foord secured an extension, while Alex Marciniak and Josh Ogunnaike remain undecided.
Tom Canton of Football.London the club has indeed been in talks with Marciniak and Ogunnaike, but no breakthrough has been reached so far. The lack of progress does not preclude negotiations from continuing beyond the June 30 deadline.
Both players are under‑23, so any interested club must agree a compensation fee with Arsenal, a process that can be complex. The compensation requirement adds a further hurdle to potential moves.
A recent precedent is Dan Casey’s aborted transfer to Crystal Palace last year, which collapsed after club‑to‑club talks despite his out‑of‑contract status. Casey subsequently joined Fulham later in the 2025/26 season.
Arsenal’s training ground at London Colney remains the base for these discussions. Whether Marciniak and Ogunnaike sign new deals or depart, the Gunners must ultimately approve any transfer fee, leaving the outcome uncertain.
