Arsenal's midfield hunt: why Bouaddi stalls and Guimaraes looms

🇬🇧

Arsenal are seeking an immediate midfield upgrade as the club looks to replace the gap left by recent departures, and the pursuit of Ayyoub Bouaddi has stalled. Lille’s insistence on retaining the Morocco international for another season clashes with Mikel Arteta’s demand for a player who can contribute now.

The club has not confirmed any agreement to sign Bouaddi, and Lille’s desire to keep the Morocco international for one more season does not suit Arsenal’s timeline. A loan back or a 2027 signing has not been agreed, and acquiring him immediately would require what the report describes as “crazy money”.

Arsenal have shifted focus to Bruno Guimaraes and Alex Scott, both of whom fit a more immediate need. Guimaraes is the larger target; Newcastle rejected a bid estimated at £55‑60 million and, at the time of writing, no second bid has been submitted.

Bournemouth have made clear that Alex Scott is not for sale, while ongoing contract negotiations add complexity. Interest from Chelsea could further inflate his price, according to the report.

Arsenal remain confident in their transfer strategy and refuse to overspend despite a market that appears heavily inflated this summer. The club also avoided a rush for Jeremy Monga, who is expected to join Manchester City for over £10 million, deeming the fee excessive.

The Gunners will continue to pursue midfield options that offer immediate impact and value for money, while navigating Lille’s stance and the high price tags demanded for their targets. The report notes there is no panic despite other clubs spending big and starting the summer aggressively.
