Cardiff City secures Manchester City prodigy to fuel academy rise
Manchester City midfielder Cass Machin, 16, has completed a permanent transfer to Cardiff City this summer, joining the Welsh club’s academy on a scholarship and professional contract after featuring in City’s U16 side last season.
GSW Football announced the move on Instagram on July 1, posting a photo of the midfielder wearing a Bluebirds scarf at Cardiff City Stadium. The accompanying caption praised the "perfect opportunity" for Machin to continue his development in a thriving environment.
Machin entered Manchester City’s system at the U9 level, progressed through the CFA ranks and earned the City Tough award as part of the U12 squad in May 2022. He featured in the club’s U16 setup last season, showcasing the technical gifts that have marked his meteoric rise.
Cardiff City head coach Brian Barry‑Murphy, who joined the club on a three‑year deal in June 2025 after managing Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad, has made academy development a priority. The 16‑year‑old’s scholarship and professional terms fit Barry‑Murphy’s strategy of nurturing young talent for first‑team promotion.
The signing bolsters a Bluebirds academy that has already seen several graduates reach the senior side and coincides with the club’s promotion to the EFL Championship. Cardiff also confirmed the arrival of Aston Villa defender Thierry Katsukunya for its U21 side, signalling a broader youth‑recruitment push.
For Machin, the permanent move offers a clear pathway to the U18 squad for the 2026‑27 campaign and the chance to thrive under a coach keen on fast‑tracking academy prospects. The deal promises regular development opportunities and a potential route to first‑team football.
Manchester City also confirmed the departure of an academy coach to Derby County, reflecting ongoing changes within the club’s youth structure.
