Family pull and ambition drive Joel Senior back to Tranmere

🇬🇧

Defender Joel Senior, 27, has completed a move from Bristol Rovers to Tranmere Rovers, signing a two-year contract subject to a medical for family reasons in the north west and rejoining manager Darrell Clarke as the club looks to strengthen its right flank.

Senior previously worked with Clarke at Bristol Rovers, featuring under the manager during the first half of last season before Clarke’s dismissal. Their prior partnership ended when Clarke was sacked.

Although Senior held an option for a third season at Bristol Rovers, the club honoured his request to relocate closer to his family in the north west. The move therefore frees him to join Tranmere on a two-year deal.

Senior’s playing résumé includes a season with Burnley and spells at Altrincham, Carlisle United and Morecambe. He is a Manchester‑born right‑back with experience across the English lower leagues.

Speaking to Tranmere’s website, Senior said, “I’ve come here to push the club to the right end of the table and do them proud this season on the pitch.” He added, “I’ve worked with the manager before and I know how ambitious and driven he is.”

Manager Darrell Clarke praised the signing, stating, “He’s shown consistency at this level and we feel his profile suits exactly what we want; someone who can defend, get up and down the pitch and add quality in both phases of the game.” Clarke believes Senior fits the club’s tactical profile.

Senior’s arrival bolsters Tranmere’s defensive options as the club targets a higher league finish this season. His familiarity with Clarke’s expectations is expected to accelerate his integration into the squad.
