Freckleton swaps St Mirren for LASK as Austrian champions eye Europe

🇬🇧

Miguel Freckleton, the 22‑year‑old English defender, departs St Mirren after a single season to sign for Austrian champions LASK. The move comes as LASK prepare to defend their league title and step into the Champions League play‑off round, mirroring Celtic’s European path.

Freckleton joined St Mirren last year. He made 47 appearances and scored four goals. Prior to moving north, he was on the books of Sheffield United and spent time on loan at four different English clubs.

LASK secured the Austrian Bundesliga title, ending a 61‑year wait and marking only their second league triumph. The club also captured the Austrian Cup for a second time, replicating the 1964‑65 season’s league‑and‑cup double. These successes underline LASK’s resurgence under their current campaign.

Dietmar Kuhbauer’s side will open the defence of their league crown later this month. They are set to enter the Champions League at the play‑off round in August. This entry mirrors the path taken by Celtic in the same stage.

St Mirren released a statement saying, “We sincerely thank Miguel for his contributions.” The club added, “He departs with the best wishes of everyone at St Mirren.” Freckleton’s departure leaves a vacancy in the Paisley club’s back line as they look ahead.
