From Bruges to London: De Maesschalck lands Arsenal academy role
The announcement arrived with a simple message: 'We are pleased to announce the appointment of Pascal De Maesschalck as our new Academy Director.'
At 52, the Belgian football executive leaves Strasbourg to take charge of Arsenal’s youth setup, succeeding Per Mertesacker, who departed after eight seasons in the role.
De Maesschalck’s career in Belgian academies began at Club Brugge, where he served as youth director from 2007 until 2021. During his tenure, he helped develop several first-team talents, including players who later starred in the Belgian Pro League.
His move to Monaco in the summer of 2021 marked a shift to Ligue 1, where he took up the role of Youth Coordinator. Under his watch, young players such as Eliesse ben Seghir, Maghnes Akliouche, and Soungoutou Magassa progressed to first-team football.
At Strasbourg, De Maesschalck switched to a technical leadership position, contributing to the club’s run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League last season.
The Gunners’ official statement framed his appointment as a commitment to building one of the world’s best academies: 'His appointment reflects our ongoing commitment to developing one of the world’s leading academies and providing talented young players with the environment, support, and opportunities to reach their full potential.'
Pascal De Maesschalck’s arrival at Arsenal completes a journey from relative obscurity in Belgium to a high-profile role in English football’s elite infrastructure.
His career path also intersected with other Belgian figures in the game, including Nils Koppen, who has been linked with board positions in English football.
Earlier this year, De Maesschalck was mentioned as a candidate for Anderlecht’s Sporting Director role, but Antoine Sibierski was ultimately appointed instead.
"His appointment reflects our ongoing commitment to developing one of the world’s leading academies and providing talented young players with the environment, support, and opportunities to reach their full potential," the club’s statement read.
