Southampton expelled from play-offs, Windass urges restart with Wrexham

🇬🇧 22 May 2026

Southampton have been expelled from the Championship play-offs after admitting to spying on rival clubs. Josh Windass has called for the competition to be restarted with Wrexham taking Southampton’s place.

The admission of spying was made by Southampton officials. The revelation prompted immediate scrutiny from the competition organizers.

The league responded by removing Southampton from the play-off schedule. The decision was based on the club’s breach of competition integrity.

The expulsion leaves an open slot in the play-off bracket. The vacancy must be filled before the next round can proceed.

Windass argued that the play-offs should be replayed without Southampton. He suggested that Wrexham be inserted into the draw.

Wrexham, a club competing in the same division, would assume the position left vacant. Windass believes this would restore fairness to the tournament.

The governing body is now tasked with evaluating the demand and determining the next steps. A decision on whether to restart the play-offs and include Wrexham is expected soon.
