Lens confronts defensive void after Malang Sarr departs
RC Lens faces a growing defensive gap after a wave of departures, making the loss of Malang Sarr a critical blow to the squad’s depth ahead of the next campaign. The 27‑year‑old centre‑back had been a mainstay since joining in 2024, and his contract expires on 30 June, leaving the club scrambling for replacements.
Captain Adrien Thomasson left on a free transfer for Stade Rennais, stripping Lens of its on‑field leader. Winger Allan Saint‑Maximin also exited after his short‑term contract ran out, and manager Pierre Sage departed for Crystal Palace after just one season.
Malang Sarr, 27, will see his contract terminate on 30 June. He arrived at RC Lens for the 2024/25 season following a mutual termination of his deal with Chelsea.
The former OGC Nice defender and France youth international revived his career at the Stade Bollaert. His defensive contributions helped stabilise the back line.
Last season Sarr featured in 39 matches across all competitions, playing a key role in the club’s performance. In total he amassed 62 appearances for RC Lens.
With his contract expired, Sarr is now seeking a new club. The defender’s availability adds a potential option for teams needing experienced centre‑back cover.
