Liverpool fans shape a new hierarchy of club legends

🇬🇧

An unprecedented fan-driven poll has reshaped Liverpool’s view of its legends, pitting modern icons against historic greats. With roughly 1.4 million votes from supporters, former players, journalists and a club panel, the ranking crowned Steven Gerrard as the top‑ranked player in the club’s 100‑year history.

The exercise combined supporter sentiment, historical records and internal assessment to order greatness across 134 years of Liverpool football. The resulting top five – Steven Gerrard, Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, Mohamed Salah and John Barnes – provide a shorthand for the club’s identity across eras.

Gerrard emerged from Liverpool’s academy, spent 17 years in the first team and amassed more than 700 appearances. His 186 goals place him sixth on the club’s all‑time scoring list.

The midfielder’s defining contribution remains the 2005 Champions League final, a performance that secured a permanent place in both Liverpool folklore and European football history. That moment, coupled with his longevity, underpins his influence in the poll.

Behind the top five, former greats also feature: Ian Callaghan finished tenth, Roger Hunt ninth and Virgil van Dijk eighth. Alan Hansen occupied seventh place, narrowly ahead of Graeme Souness. The presence of Mohamed Salah in fourth highlights how modern achievers now sit comfortably alongside canonical names.

Gerrard admitted he did not expect to finish first and suggested recency bias may have helped his placement. He reiterated that Kenny Dalglish remains his personal number one, recalling watching Dalglish on VHS before inheriting the shirt himself.

The contrast between historic icons and recent stars shows that Liverpool’s heritage is judged as much on symbolism and endurance as on trophies. The poll therefore a player’s emotional connection to supporters can outweigh pure statistical achievement.
