Liverpool’s midfield puzzle may have an €80m solution in Tchouaméni

🇬🇧

The Kop’s anthem rose into the Anfield night as Liverpool’s midfield laboured once more. Against the better teams, the Reds’ shape frayed between defence and midfield, leaving their centre-backs exposed. For a club built on defensive solidity, the absence of a true ball-winning specialist has become glaring. Now, with Andoni Iraola’s tenure at Anfield under way, the search for that missing piece may finally reach its conclusion.

Liverpool have spent the past year attempting to plug the void left by Fabinho’s departure. Several midfielders have been tried in the role, yet none have replicated the Brazilian’s authority, intelligence or physical dominance. The club’s recruitment team has faced an unenviable task: finding a player capable of shielding the back four while also initiating attacks with precision. Reports suggest Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni could be available this summer for around £80 million.

At 24, Tchouaméni is entering the absolute peak years of his career. The French international combines physical presence with elite defensive duels and exceptional game-reading ability. His ability to recover possession and immediately transition into attack makes him an ideal fit for Iraola’s system, which demands high pressing and rapid defensive recovery. Liverpool’s struggles last season were defined by opponents exploiting the space between midfield and defence, a problem a specialist like Tchouaméni would immediately address.

Real Madrid’s midfield depth is a factor in any potential deal. With competition intensifying and other players favoured in their long-term plans, Madrid may consider a substantial offer if it aligns with their own strategy. Liverpool’s hierarchy, led by Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, could secure a world-class player without entering protracted bidding wars for overvalued targets. Names like Adam Wharton have attracted valuations exceeding £100 million, making Tchouaméni’s reported £80 million fee appear as exceptional value.

Should Liverpool pursue Tchouaméni, he would form a formidable partnership with either Adam Wharton or Alexis Mac Allister. The Frenchman’s presence would free up creative midfielders like Florian Wirtz to influence matches higher up the pitch, while Alexander Isak would benefit from faster transitions. Liverpool’s defensive line would gain protection, and the entire structure would regain balance. More importantly, they would finally possess the specialist holding midfielder that has been missing since Fabinho’s exit.

Every Liverpool side that has challenged for titles has been built on strong foundations. From Javier Mascherano to Fabinho, the great teams always had a player willing to do the unseen work. If Iraola is to restore Liverpool to the summit of English and European football, that position must become a priority. Tchouaméni is not just another midfielder; he could be the cornerstone of Liverpool’s next great side.
