€6m gamble: Millwall land Belgian midfielder Servais from Mechelen

🇬🇧

Millwall have completed the €6 million permanent transfer of 20-year-old Belgian midfielder Mathis Servais from KV Mechelen. The Championship club announced the deal on Tuesday evening, with Servais signing a five-year contract in England.

The move reunites Servais with former Sparta Rotterdam teammate Camiel Neghli at Millwall, where the Belgian joins a squad that finished third in the Championship last season. Servais departs after just one season at Mechelen, during which he quickly established himself as a key creative force.

KV Mechelen generated €6 million from Servais’ sale, an amount that makes him their third-highest outgoing transfer ever, behind former Ajax attacker Hassane Bandé and Aster Vranckx. The teenager was signed last summer from SK Beveren for €1.2 million, immediately delivering a profit for Mechelen.

Servais made 32 appearances in the Jupiler Pro League last season, contributing two goals and four assists. His performances helped KV Mechelen secure historic first-time qualification for the Champions’ Play-Offs, underlining his influence in midfield.

At Millwall, Servais steps into a club that narrowly missed promotion to the Premier League last season by finishing third in the Championship. The Belgian’s arrival adds depth and creativity to a side targeting a top-flight place.

The transfer represents a significant financial and sporting moment for both parties. For Mechelen, it was a shrewd investment that paid quick dividends, while Servais gains a platform to further his development in England’s second tier.

Millwall’s recruitment team is now finalising administrative details before the player can be registered and presented to supporters ahead of the new campaign.
