Newcastle’s €27m bid for Steur turns Ajax’s transfer crisis into jackpot

🇬🇧
Newcastle United will pay Ajax a reported €27 million for the services of 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur, €24 million plus €3 million in easily achievable bonuses. Ajax will also secure a 12.5 per cent sell-on clause as part of the agreement. Steur had previously been close to agreeing a new contract with Ajax that would have run until mid-2030. His father, Johan Steur, sought clarity on how then-technical director Jordi Cruijff envisaged his son’s future at the club. Cruijff, citing the presence of Jorthy Mokio, could not provide guarantees, prompting the collapse of the principle agreement. Faced with uncertainty, Steur explored alternatives and Newcastle’s total offer of €27 million proved impossible for Ajax to refuse. The sale plugs a financial gap on Cruijff’s transfer ledger and De describes the departure as ‘a gift from heaven’. The fee places Steur among the top fifteen most valuable exits in Ajax’s history, underscoring the scale of the windfall for the Amsterdam club.
