Port Vale’s goalkeeping revamp boosted by West Ham’s Mason Terry loan
Facing a shortage of experienced goalkeepers, Port Vale have moved to secure Mason Terry on a season‑long loan from West Ham United, the 21‑year‑old who was named Braintree Town’s supporters’ player of the year after a spell in the National League.
Mason Terry, the 21‑year‑old West Ham goalkeeper, netted an added‑time equaliser for Braintree Town against Truro City in the National League Cup last season. The goal highlighted his composure under pressure despite his primary role as a keeper.
During his loan spell at Braintree Town, Terry earned the supporters’ player of the year award. The accolade reflected his consistent performances throughout the campaign.
Prior to the Braintree loan, Terry featured in the National League South with Hornchurch and progressed through West Ham’s youth system. Those experiences equipped him with a blend of lower‑league grit and academy training.
The season‑long loan to Port Vale offers Terry his first chance to debut in the English Football League. The Valiants hope his arrival will strengthen the squad’s goalkeeping depth.
Terry becomes the second goalkeeper to arrive at Vale Park this summer, following Barnsley’s Jackson Smith, who signed in June. The back‑to‑back signings suggest a strategic overhaul of the goalkeeping department.
All of the club’s transfer activity, including Terry’s loan, was finalised in July 2026. The timing aligns with the pre‑season window and the club’s planning calendar.
Club director Brady expressed quiet satisfaction with Vale’s recent transfer business. His comment underscores confidence in the recruitment strategy.
Terry will now train with the first‑team squad and compete for the starting berth ahead of the upcoming league fixtures. He must also contend with incumbent keeper Jackson Smith for the number‑one spot, a challenge that will shape his integration.
