Real Madrid's centre-back hunt shifts from Dias to Bastoni

🇬🇧
Real Madrid have identified a clear weakness in their centre‑back line, prompting incoming manager Jose Mourinho to seek an additional defender despite already securing Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer. The Spaniards aim to bolster the defence before the window closes, with Alessandro Bastoni emerging as the preferred target. Manchester City have rebuffed approaches from Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Chelsea for Ruben Dias this summer. The 29‑year‑old Portuguese international, signed from Benfica in 2020, is under contract until 2029, making a move unlikely. Real Madrid’s scouting list also featured Nico Schlotterbeck and Josko Gvardiol as potential reinforcements for the back line. Both names have been linked to the Spanish giants, though no formal offers have materialised. With the Dias pursuit stalled, Mourinho’s focus has turned to Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan. The 27‑year‑old Italian international is regarded as the ideal candidate to bolster Real Madrid’s defence. Bastoni’s expected transfer fee is around €60 million, according to reports. Before finalising the deal, Real Madrid must arrange departures to free up squad space and comply with financial constraints. The club aims to complete the signing before the transfer window closes, pending negotiations on the fee and the exit of existing players. If successful, the addition would address the centre‑back shortage identified by Mourinho.
