£100m Tonali deal underscores Tottenham’s midfield overhaul

🇬🇧

Tottenham Hotspur’s recent midfield spending peaked with a reported £100m package for Italy international Sandro Tonali, while the club also secured Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United. The moves come as Joao Palhinha confirmed he will leave after his season‑long loan from Bayern Munich ends, ending his 45‑appearance spell.

Palhinha, 30, featured in 45 matches for Tottenham during his loan from Bayern Munich. He scored the decisive goal against Everton on the final day that secured the club’s Premier League survival.

Roberto De Zerbi confirmed that Palhinha is not in his plans as he reshapes the squad after the Spurs avoided relegation. The manager aims to move the team forward with new signings.

Tottenham secured the services of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United to bolster the midfield. Fernandes joins a group of arrivals intended to refresh the creative options.

The club also reached an agreement with Newcastle United for Italy international Sandro Tonali, a deal that could total an overall package of £100m. The potential investment underscores Tottenham’s ambition to strengthen the centre of the park.

Palhinha posted on Instagram, “Representing Tottenham has had a profound impact on my life, not only professionally but also personally, and it is something I will carry with me forever.” The statement reflects his appreciation for the club.

He added, “As I have said before, what truly defines a great institution and a great football club is its supporters… With the utmost respect and gratitude, I say goodbye to all of you. Thank you so much COYS.” The message highlighted his bond with the fans.

Palhinha is not expected to rejoin Bayern Munich under captain‑manager Vincent Kompany and will explore options ahead of the next season. His departure adds to the midfield turnover at Tottenham.
