Ajax's rebuilding phase: Davy Klaassen on adapting to Míchel's vision
In a Saturday friendly that ended 1‑3 against Panathinaikos, 33‑year‑old midfielder Davy Klaassen said Ajax still have many steps to take under new Spanish coach Míchel, stressing that the different playing style will need time to settle. He highlighted the need to integrate new concepts both with and without the ball.
Klaassen, who captains Ajax, noted that the squad has undergone significant changes since Míchel took charge. He said the team is learning new concepts with and without the ball, which cannot be mastered overnight.
"Het is nog niet wat je wilt zien. Het is een andere manier van spelen en dat kost gewoon tijd", Klaassen explained in an interview on Ajax’s official channel. He added that the club has only a few days to work on these ideas.
After the break, the Dutch side returned to the pitch with a host of young players, testing the new system in real time. Klaassen described the experience as challenging, with players forced into spaces they had never occupied before.
He stressed that continuous work on the playing style is essential and that the effort should eventually translate into wins. The midfielder remained optimistic, describing the coaching staff as enthusiastic and focused.
The comments underline the transitional phase Ajax is navigating as they aim to restore their competitive edge. How quickly the squad adapts to Míchel’s philosophy will shape their performance in upcoming fixtures.
