Arsenal’s £130m dilemma: how much is Morgan Rogers really worth?

🇬🇧

Arsenal’s interest in Morgan Rogers has stalled after the England forward questioned his £130 million valuation by Aston Villa. The Gunners, who have been strongly linked with Rogers this summer, now face a pricing dispute that risks ending negotiations before they progress further.

Villa’s valuation of Rogers at £130 million is anchored to Manchester City’s £116 million deal for Elliot Anderson, despite the two players occupying different positions. The comparison has complicated Arsenal’s pursuit, with Unai Emery’s side using Anderson’s transfer as a benchmark to justify their own valuation.

James McNicholas reported that Arsenal’s assessment of Rogers’ worth has been influenced by Villa’s insistence on matching Anderson’s fee. The Gunners, however, view the two players as having distinct profiles, which undermines Villa’s position. Villa, meanwhile, have made it clear they do not want to sell Rogers and believe his market value exceeds Anderson’s.

Rogers joined Villa from Middlesbrough for around £7 million in 2024 and signed a contract extension until 2031 at the end of last year. The 23-year-old’s contributions last season—14 goals and 12 assists—have drawn Arsenal’s attention, but the club remains unconvinced the numbers justify a £130 million fee.

Villa’s valuation also accounts for a sell-on clause from Middlesbrough, further inflating the figure. The inclusion of the clause has made the asking price a sticking point, with Arsenal and other potential suitors reluctant to meet it.

Rogers addressed the valuation before England’s World Cup match against Mexico, striking a pragmatic tone. “I’m not sure I’m worth all of that!” he said when asked about the reported figure. “Of course it’s nice to hear that from people. But I don’t let outside noise dictate me.”

The Gunners admire Rogers and are understood to want the move, but the price tag risks pushing them away from the deal altogether—a scenario Villa may be willing to accept to force a higher valuation.
