Arsenal set to land free agent Meslier as depth behind Raya and Kepa
Illan Meslier, 26, will join Arsenal on a free transfer after his Leeds United contract expired on 1 July.
The French goalkeeper arrives at the Emirates Stadium to provide experienced depth behind David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga. Arsenal’s goalkeeping department now includes two proven internationals alongside Meslier’s domestic pedigree.
Meslier spent six seasons with Leeds United, from 2019 to 2025, initially arriving from FC Lorient on loan before making the move permanent. His time at Elland Road saw him become the Peacocks’ undisputed first-choice goalkeeper for much of that period.
The 2024-25 campaign marked a turning point when manager Daniel Farke relegated him to the bench, limiting his minutes and accelerating his exit. The reduced role culminated in his free-agent status this summer.
During his Leeds tenure, Meslier made 215 appearances, kept 70 clean sheets and conceded 286 goals. His reliability was tested at a club that struggled defensively, yet he remained a consistent presence between the posts.
Since March 2025, Meslier has seen limited action, a trend that continued until his departure. Arsenal, meanwhile, are set to add a seasoned professional to their roster as they prepare for Premier League and cup commitments.
The Gunners’ current third-choice goalkeeper, Tommy Setford, is expected to be loaned out in the coming weeks to secure regular playing time. This move would create space for Meslier within Arsenal’s squad structure.
For Meslier, the free transfer represents a fresh start after a period of reduced visibility at Leeds. For Arsenal, the capture of a French goalkeeper with top-flight experience strengthens their depth in a competitive position.
