Barcelona's Álvarez chase tests a €30m fee gap in direct talks
Barcelona are seeking a marquee striker to bolster their attack in a transfer window constrained by LaLiga’s financial‑fair‑play rules, and Julián Álvarez has emerged as their top priority. A direct club‑to‑club meeting reported by El Chiringuito TV journalist Jordi Jota three days ago shows Barcelona’s willingness to invest senior resources despite a €120–140 million bid that trails Atletico Madrid’s €150 million floor.
Representatives from both clubs sat down in person, confirming that negotiations have moved beyond intermediaries and formal bid letters. Jota described Álvarez as “going through a very bad time”, indicating personal strain amid the drawn‑out saga.
Barcelona have been working on an improved bid in the €120–140 million range after their initial €100 million offer was rejected in late May, a development previously covered on Football Espana. Atletico Madrid have publicly stated they will not consider offers below €150 million for a player contracted until 2030.
Álvarez’s contract runs to 2030 and includes a €500 million release clause. While his personal discomfort is noted, it does not alter the contractual arithmetic.
CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has reiterated that Atletico have “no desire” to sell and has threatened a FIFA complaint over alleged tapping‑up. Coach Diego Simeone has expressed public unhappiness with Álvarez after the player said he wanted to leave, and reports of PSG interest give Atletico additional leverage.
Barcelona must now decide whether to stretch beyond their reported €130–140 million ceiling or redirect their attacking budget elsewhere. The direct meeting suggests the gap is not yet deemed unbridgeable, but any structured deal would need to satisfy Atletico’s floor and possibly include instalments or add‑ons.
