Barcelona's title push hinges on López's August comeback
Barcelona midfielder Fermín López Marín is edging closer to a return after a fifth‑metatarsal fracture suffered on May 17 against Real Betis, with reports suggesting he could be fit for the La Liga opener against Athletic Bilbao on August 16, a match that will mark his first competitive appearance since the injury.
The fracture ruled López out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending his hopes of representing Spain at the tournament. The injury occurred during Barcelona’s match against Real Betis.
López underwent surgery on May 19, two days after the May 17 incident. Initial medical forecasts suggested a three‑month layoff, based on similar cases.
More than six weeks after the operation, medical staff report steady progress. López has completed intensive gym sessions, pool work and specialised treatment. He has now resumed running as part of his rehabilitation.
Coach Hansi Flick and his staff view the midfielder as a key component of their plans. They will closely monitor his workload throughout pre‑season to avoid shortcuts. The club remains cautious despite the optimism.
No official return date has been announced, but all signs point to López being available around the start of the new season. Barcelona’s first league match is scheduled for August 16 against Athletic Bilbao.
