Buurmeester leaves AZ for Leganés with five-year contract extension
Zico Buurmeester will leave AZ Alkmaar for CD Leganés on a permanent transfer, the Spanish club confirmed via official channels. The 24-year-old midfielder has signed a contract running until mid-2029.
Buurmeester joined AZ’s youth academy in 2013 and made his Eredivisie debut in 2021 against Sparta Rotterdam. Despite making 57 appearances for the Alkmaarders, he never established himself as a first-team regular, scoring five goals and providing three assists.
His AZ contract was set to expire in mid-2028, but the move to Leganés represents his first step outside the Netherlands. Leganés competes in Spain’s second tier and finished 16th in the league last season.
Between 2023/24 and 2025/26, Buurmeester was loaned to PEC Zwolle, where he made 41 appearances. He was a consistent starter for Zwolle last season, though he missed a handful of matches due to injury.
The transfer fee remains undisclosed, as AZ did not reveal financial details in their announcement.
