Darmstadt’s third Dutch signing targets Sparta midfielder

Midfielder Lance Duijvestijn leaves Sparta Rotterdam to join German 2. Bundesliga side SV Darmstadt 98, announced today at 20:10. The move marks Darmstadt’s third recent acquisition from the Netherlands, following the arrivals of PSV prospect Nicolas Verkooijen and Graafschap forward Ibrahim El Kadiri.

Duijvestijn told the club’s official channel: "Na de afgelopen jaren veel ervaring in Nederland te hebben opgedaan, kijk ik erg uit naar deze overstap naar het buitenland en naar Darmstadt". He added that the negotiations were smooth and that Darmstadt’s playing style matches his own football ideas.

Sport director Paul Fernie said: "Met Lance krijgen we een belangrijk puzzelstukje in handen voor de transformatie van onze aanvallende opties. Hij heeft een zeer actieve speelstijl, vindt oplossingen tussen de linies en zoekt altijd zelf de ruimte om te scoren. Hij is bovendien technisch begaafd en werkt hard zonder bal. We hebben veel wedstrijden van Lance bekeken en hij was een speler die we absoluut wilden hebben." Fernie noted that the club had closely observed Duijvestijn’s matches before deciding to sign him.

Duijvestijn arrived at Sparta Rotterdam in the summer of 2025 from Excelsior Rotterdam. Under coach Maurice Steijn he failed to claim a regular starting berth and spent the previous winter on loan at Fortuna Sittard, which had intended to sign him permanently.

SV Darmstadt 98 competes in Germany’s second tier, the 2. Bundesliga. The club’s ambition is to enhance its offensive options through the addition of active, technically gifted players.

Prior to Duijvestijn’s arrival, Darmstadt secured the services of PSV talent Nicolas Verkooijen and Graafschap forward Ibrahim El Kadiri, both also from the Netherlands. These signings underline the German side’s recent focus on Dutch talent.

Duijvestijn is set to report to Darmstadt ahead of the new campaign, where he will look to add his attacking drive to the squad.
