Dundee united’s gamble on Champions League scorer Idjessi Metsoko
Dundee United have moved to bolster their striking options with the arrival of Togo international Idjessi Metsoko, a Champions League scorer, on a season‑long loan from Viktoria Plzen. Manager Jim Goodwin says the 24‑year‑old forward provides the extra attacking threat the club needs, and United retain an option to buy.
Metsoko’s Champions League record includes a goal against Stuttgart while playing for Slovan Bratislava in the competition’s group stage. He added another international goal on his debut in March, scoring against Guinea.
The striker’s recent club career has been split between Slovakia, where he spent two seasons on loan. After his Champions League strike for Slovan Bratislava, he moved to Spartak Trnava last term, netting five goals in 17 appearances.
For Viktoria Plzen, the deal represents a chance to offload a player who has made just 10 Czech top‑flight appearances since joining in 2024. The Czech club will hope the loan move helps Metsoko rediscover his form.
Goodwin framed Metsoko’s arrival as a strategic addition, citing his physical profile and technical attributes. “He’s a powerful, explosive forward with great feet for a striker and quick across the ground,” the manager said, adding that the player possesses all the attributes they needed when looking for another forward.
Metsoko himself expressed excitement, saying, “It has always been a dream of mine to play in the UK and I’m looking forward to the new challenge.” He added that the opportunity to work under the manager and coaching staff in the Scottish Premiership appealed to him and he can’t wait to meet the lads and help the team have a successful season.
United will now look to integrate Metsoko quickly as they push for a strong finish in the Scottish Premiership. The loan gives the club a fresh attacking option while the option to buy provides a longer‑term solution if the forward adapts to the Scottish game.
