FIFA’s 5 July joke: Garcia and Courtois react to Balogun non-ban
Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia expressed outrage after FIFA overturned Folarin Balogun’s suspension one day before the Round of 16 clash with the USA. Garcia opened his pre-match press conference with a pointed remark: “I did not know 5 July at FIFA is the same as 1 April here.” He added that the decision undermined the integrity of the sport.
The Belgian Football Association (KBVB) called the reversal “astounding” and confirmed it is exploring all legal avenues. A phone call between FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Donald Trump preceded the green light for Balogun to play, according to reports.
Thibaut Courtois, Belgium goalkeeper, echoed his coach’s frustration but stressed the team’s focus remains solely on the pitch. “We want to win, whoever we face,” he said. “My initial reaction was surprise—especially with the decision coming less than 24 hours before kick-off. But we must win on the field. Balogun is a good player, yet we play against the whole team.”
Garcia cut short further questions on the matter, insisting the squad would concentrate on the sporting challenge ahead. “I want to focus on the sporting side now. Let’s talk about that, please.”

The KBVB’s statement described the overturned ban as a breach of sporting integrity and ethics, calling it unprecedented in its history. Courtois dismissed suggestions the decision could sway Belgium’s tactics, reiterating the team’s commitment to earn qualification on merit. “It’s simple: we aim to reach the quarter-finals the right way.”FIFA lifts Balogun red card, Belgium federation left stunned
The controversy dominated headlines the day before Belgium’s Round of 16 tie, overshadowing all other pre-match discussions. Pochettino, coach of the USA, had earlier hailed the decision as “fantastic for football,” amplifying the divide between the two camps.
