World Cup

From bench to breakthrough: Diego Moreira's impact for Belgium

🇧🇪
Diego Moreira entered the World Cup as a substitute against Senegal, turning a previously empty bench into a lively performance that caught coach Rudi Garcia’s eye, while critics had questioned his omission after being unused versus Egypt, Iran and New Zealand. Before the Senegal match, Moreira had not set foot on the pitch in the tournament, remaining on the bench as Belgium drew 1-1 with Egypt and 0-0 with Iran. In the final group game, a 1-5 loss to New Zealand, coach Rudi Garcia again left him out of the starting eleven. The wing‑back, who plays for French club Strasbourg, is praised for his technique, speed and attacking instinct, qualities that many observers felt warranted more playing time. Their doubts grew after he was omitted from the line‑up against New Zealand despite the team's heavy defeat. Moreira himself said before the tournament, “Every player wants every match. In training you must show you are available and give everything. That is what I do. When the coach decides, I go all in.” Against Senegal, Moreira recorded 29 touches and completed ten of fourteen passes, with eight of those passes directed into the final third of the field. He also won three key duels and delivered five crosses – the highest number by any Belgian player, matching Youri Tielemans, although only one of those crosses found a teammate. His dribbling was equally mixed, succeeding on two of four attempts. The statistics therefore present both positive and negative aspects of his brief appearance. The Belgian side is expected to give Moreira further minutes, possibly as a substitute against the United States or even in the starting lineup. This prospect is reinforced by Maxim De Cuyper’s modest performance at left back, where his defensive contribution was deemed below his usual standard. Moreira’s versatile profile offers Belgium a fresh option as the tournament progresses, and his debut has already won over supporters. Whether this marks a turning point for his World Cup campaign will become clearer in the upcoming matches.
