Germany U19’s double prize still hinges on one more step in Wales
Germany U19 have secured a semi-final place at the 2026 UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Wales, guaranteeing qualification for the 2027 FIFA U20 World Cup alongside the pursuit of a continental crown.
The team’s progress came despite a heavy 4-0 defeat to Spain in their final Group A match, a result that did not prevent them from finishing second in the group. Their campaign began with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Denmark, a match that set the tone for their tournament.
A commanding 4-0 win against hosts Wales in Wrexham further strengthened their position, with the Welsh crowd unable to inspire a comeback. Reaching the semi-finals fulfils the team’s primary objective, while the automatic qualification for the U20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan adds a historic dimension to their achievement.
Christian Wörns’ side has relied heavily on a fluid attacking partnership, with captain Francis Onyeka leading the charge up front. Onyeka, recently loaned to SV Elversberg from Bayer Leverkusen, has been instrumental in the team’s offensive output.
Hamburg’s Otto Stange, another key figure, has delivered three goals during the group stage, showcasing his rising profile. Stange’s connection with Elversberg is notable, having also been loaned to the club last season until February, reinforcing the club’s reputation for nurturing young German talent.
The focus now shifts to Wednesday’s semi-final against Ukraine, where the young Germans aim to secure their first U19 continental title since 2014.
