Liverpool land Scotland’s U16 captain in long-term centre-back plan

🇬🇧

Liverpool have completed the signing of 16-year-old Scotland youth international Dara Jikiemi, securing a five-year contract at Anfield.

The defender’s move follows his decision to reject a new deal at Celtic, a stance that accelerated Liverpool’s pursuit. The club confirmed the agreement on Sunday, with Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano revealing the details on X.

Romano’s post on the platform confirmed Jikiemi’s paperwork was finalised, bringing an end to a transfer saga that began in November 2025. The Scotland U16 captain arrives at Liverpool as part of the club’s long-term centre-back strategy.

Jikiemi will initially join Liverpool’s under-18s next season, continuing his development at the AXA Training Centre. The teenager’s integration reflects the club’s structured approach to academy recruitment and progression.

Liverpool’s defensive recruitment has intensified in recent transfer windows, with Giovanni Leoni arriving last year from Parma for £26 million. Jeremy Jacquet is set to join this summer from Rennes for £60 million, while Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye have also been added to the defensive ranks.

The departure of Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid on a free transfer has further emphasised Liverpool’s need to rebuild their defensive options. Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both out of contract in 2027, heightening the urgency around Jikiemi’s signing.

Romano’s confirmation on X provided immediate clarity, with the journalist stating: “Liverpool have sealed deal to sign Scotland U16 captain Dara Jikiemi from Celtic, here we go!” The post underscored the completion of the paperwork and the five-year commitment from both parties.

Jikiemi’s arrival follows Liverpool’s earlier recruitment of Ben Gannon-Doak from Celtic’s academy in 2022. The winger’s subsequent move to Bournemouth last summer for £25 million highlighted the club’s ability to develop and monetise academy talent.

The young defender’s transfer represents a key step in Liverpool’s defensive restructuring, prioritising youth and long-term potential in a position central to the club’s ambitions.
