PSV land Mijnans for €13m: midfielder calls it the perfect next step

PSV have confirmed the signing of midfielder Sven Mijnans from AZ for a reported €13 million. The Eindhoven club beat off competition from Ajax to secure his services ahead of the new season.

Mijnans described his move as "the perfect next step in my career". "PSV is a beautiful club with a clear vision, strong leadership and top facilities," he said. "Here you compete for trophies every season. You can feel everyone’s hunger to go for the fourth league title next year, and I’m happy to contribute."

He also highlighted Champions League football as a lifelong dream, adding: "Playing in the Champions League is something I’ve dreamed of since I was young and I’m really looking forward to it."

The 26-year-old completed a medical at PSV before signing a five-year contract. The transfer fee is slightly lower than previously reported, with PSV outbidding both foreign clubs and Ajax in the race for his signature.

Technical director Earnest Stewart praised Mijnans’s development. "We’ve followed Sven for years and see he keeps taking big steps forward every season," Stewart said. "He’s a smart, versatile midfielder with great stamina and consistently delivers goals and assists."

The total cost to PSV is €13 million, with the club unable to trigger a sell-on clause. Mijnans had agreed conditions with AZ allowing his departure for the stated fee. He had extended his AZ contract until mid-2029, which PSV have now bought out.

Born in Spijkenisse, Mijnans is regarded as a late bloomer in professional football. He made his debut at 20 for Sparta Rotterdam, where he stayed until 2023. The Rotterdam club sold him to AZ for €2.5 million, a fee now eclipsed by PSV’s investment.

At AZ, Mijnans established himself as one of the league’s standout players and won the KNVB Cup last season. The club also reached the final stages of the UEFA Europa Conference League, where they were eliminated by Shakhtar Donetsk.

Mijnans’s arrival gives PSV an extra midfield option as they prepare for another tilt at domestic and European honours.
