Valverde's apology underscores Uruguay's World Cup heartbreak

🇪🇸

Real Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde issued an emotional Instagram statement after Uruguay’s early World Cup exit, accepting full responsibility for the defeat. The 27‑year‑old expressed his pride in representing his country and vowed never to abandon the national team despite the disappointment.

Valverde’s season has been turbulent, marked by a clash with teammate Aurelien Tchouameni near its end. Fans also criticised him for a perceived role in the dismissal of former Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso.

With Dani Carvajal departing this summer, seniority places Valverde next in line for the Real Madrid captaincy. The leadership role now rests on his shoulders as the club looks ahead.

Uruguay had counted on Valverde to lead their attack at the World Cup, but he was withdrawn for the final half‑hour of the decisive match against Spain. The removal coincided with Uruguay’s elimination from the tournament.

Valverde addressed his followers directly, acknowledging his role in the loss. He wrote, “I feel an enormous responsibility toward my country… I accept the defeat and take full responsibility for failing to fulfil my duty to the national team.”

The midfielder now faces what he describes as the most crucial season of his Real Madrid career. Should he struggle to click with coach Jose Mourinho, speculation may grow that the club could consider moving him on next summer.

At 28, Valverde will have two years remaining on his contract, meaning Los Blancos may need to offer a final major extension to retain him beyond 2028. The contract situation adds further pressure to his upcoming performances.
